Choosing a Motor Fan Blade: Material, Blade Angle and Dynamic Balance

2026-06-18·Motor Parts

A fan blade looks simple, but the wrong choice causes high noise, insufficient air volume or even excessive vibration. This article covers the three parameters that matter most when selecting one.

The purpose of an external fan is to maintain heat dissipation from the windings and frame. A poorly selected blade shows up first as elevated temperature rise, which shortens insulation life over long-term operation.

1. Material selection. Engineering plastic blades are low cost, lightweight and quiet, suitable for normal environments. For high-temperature environments or continuous full-load operation, metal or high-temperature engineering plastic blades are recommended.

2. Blade angle and air volume. The blade angle sets the balance between air volume and static pressure. Too small an angle delivers insufficient air; too large an angle raises noise and power loss. Matching to motor power and frame size is normally sufficient — arbitrary changes are not advised.

3. Dynamic balance. The blade is a rotating part, and poor dynamic balance translates directly into motor vibration. Confirm that the supplier performs dynamic balancing, especially for large frame sizes.

Providing the motor series, frame size and ambient operating temperature is usually enough for a supplier to give accurate matching advice.
